What is a Dental Implant?
Entirely comfortable, reliable and economical, dental implants are man-made roots that are gently placed where your tooth used to be. This new root can be used as an anchor for a new tooth/teeth or to support a denture. They have been used successfully for over 40 years and today’s implants are the closest thing to a real tooth that you’ll find.
Unlike a bridge or a denture, dental implants and do not rely on the neighbouring teeth for support, meaning the other teeth are left undamaged. They are also resistant to decay as they are made from titanium. With correct maintenance, they can last you a lifetime.
What is the Procedure to Get a Dental Implant?
The placing of the implants is entirely comfortable and carried out under local anaesthetic. We usually recommend some sedation as well to make the procedure easier for you. You will not feel any pain at the time during the procedure.
Below is a video that shows the process of how a single dental implant is placed.
If you would like to learn more or talk to one of our specially trained dentists about the procedure, don’t hesitate to contact us.
The Benefits of Dental Implants vs. Unfixed Dentures
Our highly specialized dentists at Seapoint Clinic believe in the benefits of both Click-tite dentures that are supported by implants, and fixed teeth that are permanently fitted to your mouth with dental implants. Dentures that are not supported by dental implants can cause bone loss and are not as secure.
Click-tite dentures supported by dental implants help stop this bone loss in the jaws in the same way that natural teeth do. They are the only way to prevent further bone loss once the teeth are gone. Rather than sit on top of the gums, Click-tite dentures are anchored to your dental implants and will relieve your worry of discomfort and embarrassment as a result of loose or ill-fitting dentures. We have seen hundreds of people benefit from improved appearance and better chewing capability and comfort.
If you do not want dentures, you can opt for Teeth in a Day, or fixed teeth, which you brush in your mouth and do not take out at night. These take up less space in your mouth, with no palate, and are the most comfortable replacement for missing teeth.
Are Dental Implants Suitable for Me? I’ve Been Told I’m Not a Good Candidate.
Yes, implants are suitable for everyone. There are several different types of implants designed for different types of situations. However, for an implant procedure to work there must be enough bone in the jaw and the bone must be strong enough to both hold and support the implant. If there is not enough bone we can stimulate and grow the bone in a procedure called bone regeneration. Mini dental implants are also useful with minimal remaining bone and are placed with local anaesthetic in just one hour.
There is no age limit to getting an implant procedure. We welcome patients from the ages of 18-90 getting dental implants regularly, after accidents, tooth extractions or following general tooth loss. If you would like to be able to chew comfortably, smile with confidence and prevent bone loss, implants are the ultimate solution for you.
At Seapoint Clinic, we have a wide range of implants and can cater for patients with many different requirements. Even if you have been previously told you are unsuitable for implants, due to bone loss for example, there are a multitude of options available to you. If you’re missing several teeth, be sure to explore our website further for information on your tooth implant options.
We also have helpful information for those only missing one tooth. If you have lost a tooth, the sooner you opt for implants the better. Every day you are missing a tooth you are losing bone. The more bone you lose the more time and effort it will take to replace.

Typically, your insurer will make a contribution to your tooth implant cost of approximately €500 per implant to a maximum of 6 when you struggle to wear a denture.
If you are getting micro-implants, this can often completely cover the cost of the treatment. If you are getting standard implants, they will make a significant contribution to the treatment cost. This is subject to prior approval from your insurer. Dental Implants are also covered by tax relief at the marginal rate of 20%, as a medical expense.
