What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are man-made roots that are gently placed where your tooth used to be. There is usually no better way to replace a failed tooth. This new root can be used as an anchor for a new tooth/teeth or to support a denture. That can mean getting rid of your loose uncomfortable denture forever or closing an irritating and unsightly gap. They have been used successfully for over 40 years and today’s implants are the closest thing to a real tooth that you’ll find.
Unlike a bridge or a denture, dental implants do not rely on the neighbouring teeth for support, meaning the other teeth are left undamaged.
They are also resistant to tooth decay as they are made from titanium. With correct maintenance, they can last you a lifetime. Dental Implants are made of the purest forms of titanium which is proven for success.
All of the dental implants used at The Seapoint Clinic are of the highest quality and all have long term studies and data behind them. Lower quality dental implants, on the other hand, have a shorter lifespan and may end up costing more in the long run. All implants are not the same, we select only the best tried and tested materials for our patients.
What is the procedure to get a dental implant?
Your dental implants are usually gently carried out under local anaesthetic. We usually recommend some light sedation to make the procedure as comfortable as possible for you. You will not feel any discomfort at the time during the procedure. Nothing. If you are sceptical (as some people are) just listen to some of the people on our testimonials page. Your complete comfort is our most important consideration.
When you are completely numb we lift the gum back gently where the implant is being placed and make a small hole. The implant is then carefully secured in place and allowed to heal.
The process of a dental implant fusing with your body and becoming strong takes on average 12 weeks. Some clinics go faster but we like the best chance of success for you rather than a rushed result. In the case of poor quality foundations, this can take longer, but considering that it can give you a tooth for life, it is well worth the wait.
If you would like to learn more or talk to one of our specially trained dentists about the procedure, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Implants to secure dentures
You can potentially benefit from either fixed teeth (that are permanently fitted to your mouth with dental implants) or Click-tite dentures, that are dentures which are supported by dental implants. Old-fashioned, traditional dentures, that are not supported by dental implants, cause bone loss and are not very secure. You can often find you end up applying huge amounts of adhesive to your dentures to secure them and eating that can’t be healthy.
Click-tite dentures, supported by dental implants, help stop this bone loss in the jaws in the same way that having natural teeth does.
Dental implants are the only way to prevent further bone loss once the teeth are gone. Rather than sit on top of the gums, Click-tite dentures are anchored to your dental implants and will relieve your worry of discomfort and embarrassment as a result of loose or ill-fitting dentures. We have provided thousands of people with the benefit of improved appearance and better chewing capability and comfort.
If you don’t want dentures, you can opt for fixed teeth or even Teeth in a Day, which you brush in your mouth and do not take out at night. These take up less space in your mouth, with no palate, and are the most comfortable replacement for missing teeth.
Are dental implants suitable for me? I’ve been told I’m not a good candidate.
Yes, dental implants can be suitable for everyone. Some people find this hard to believe, but modern dentistry has solutions for everybody. Even if you have been told that you were unsuitable in the past.
There are several different types of implants designed for different types of situations. However, for an implant procedure to work there must be enough bone in the jaw and the bone must be strong enough to both hold and support the implant. If there is not enough bone we can stimulate and grow the bone in a procedure called bone regeneration. Mini dental implants are also useful with minimal remaining bone and are placed with local anaesthetic in just one hour.
There is no age limit to getting an implant procedure. We welcome patients from the ages of 18-90+ getting dental implants regularly, after accidents, tooth extractions or following general tooth loss. If you would like to be able to chew comfortably, smile with confidence and prevent bone loss, implants are the ultimate solution for you.
At Seapoint Clinic, we have a wide range of implants and can cater for patients with many different requirements. Even if you have been previously told you are unsuitable for implants, due to bone loss for example, there are a multitude of options available to you. If you’re missing several teeth, be sure to explore our website further for information on your tooth implant options.
We also have helpful information for those only missing one tooth. If you have lost a tooth, the sooner you opt for implants the better. Every day you are missing a tooth you are losing bone. The more bone you lose the more time and effort it will take to replace.
