ORAL HEALTH

At the Seapoint Clinic we understand the importance of Oral Health.
Prevention is always better than cure and by simply maintaining frequent visits with a Hygienist you may avoid future problems with your teeth, such as fillings, root canals and gum disease.
Your teeth will be cleaned of plaque and tartar and polished greatly improving their health and appearence.
A Hygienist will also go through an oral healthcare plan with you to maintain outside or Dental visits.

Frequent risks:

1. Caries -  tooth decay and cavities
2. Gingivitis - irratation of the gums
3. Periodontitis - irratation of the soft gums
4. Dental trauma - loss of teeth

Preventive measures:

1. Plaque control
- Brush teeth with toothpaste containing fluoride after every meal, especially at night time
- Learn how to bruch teeth properly from your Hygienist
- Replace your toothbrush every 4-6 weeks or when the bristles show signs of strain
- Use floss, interdental brushes and mouth wash daily

2. Dietary habits:
- Flourides: Adequate intake of calcium, phosphorus, flouride and vitamins A, C, and D are essential. Most of these are present in adequate amounts in the normal balanced diet.Only Flourides tends to be deficient and needs to be suplemented.Teeth containing flouride are definitely more resistent to decay
- Carbohydrates: There is a definite relationship between caries(tooth decay) and the intake of refined carbohydrates like flour, sugar, and other carbohydrates which have been treated in order to make them whiter, less fibrous and tastier.Refined carbohydrates become sticky quickly and cling to the teeth for long periods. They are easily broken down to acids by the bacteria in the mouth, these acids are primarily responsible for tooth decay. The best would therefore be to stick to natural unprocessed foods-fats, cereals, meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits and cheese.
- Other Foodstuffs: Frequent consumption of acidic foodstuffs(like habitual drinking of carbonated drinks and excessive consumption of some fruit juices) is associated with erosions of the teeth.

3. Fluorides:
- Application of gel fluorides every six months.
- Introduction to fluoride supplements  if necessary

4. Periodic examinations:
- Oral examinations every 6 months
- Special effort and more frequent visits for crown, bridge, dental implant and orthodontic patients.
- Regular scale and polish treatments.

Our Advice:

- Your mouth should not bleed
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day and always at night time.
- At a young age start to practice interdental techniques with floss.
- Use of mouth rinses containing fluoride every day.
- Do not eat sugary foods and drinks in between meals.

Growing older and Oral Heatlh:

As you grow older your oral health needs will change and you may need to have teatment such as crown or bridgework.
Preventiv e measures:
- Application of substances which avoid sensitivity
- Elimination of tartar in teeth and protesis
- Practice hygiene techniques in both teeth and protesis
- Cariogenic dietary control
