Comprehensive Support and Sedation Options for Nervous Patients
At Seapoint Clinic, we understand that dental anxiety affects many people. Our dedicated team has created a supportive environment specifically designed to help nervous patients receive the care they need with dignity and comfort.
Dental phobia is very common and nothing to be embarrassed about. We meet patients every day who have struggled to go to the dentist for years and we are happy to help anyone in this difficult situation. We understand why people are nervous of the dentist, which is why we make every effort to ensure your days of bad dental experiences are over. We offer various kinds of procedures for nervous patients.
A Listening Approach
Our first step is always to understand your specific concerns and anxieties, creating a personalised approach to your dental care that puts you in control of the experience.
Clinic Environment
Our boutique hotel-like surroundings create a calming aatmosphere that feels nothing like a traditional dental practice, helping to reduce anxiety from the moment you arrive.
Sedation Options
For those who are very nervous, sedation and premedication can allow most patients to undergo dental treatments uneventfully.
Premedication
For those who need a little help prior to getting dental treatment other than a sympathetic dentist, we offer different types of sedation depending on the clinical necessity.
Often a prescription for some relaxants such as Valium taken beforehand can take the edge off the treatment and are enough for many nervous patients to go ahead. Sleeping well the night before takes the edge off the appointment and dramatically reduces stress. For more anxious patients, taking some more valium before coming in is sufficient to ensure a comfortable appointment.
Oral Sedation
For those who are undergoing more lengthy procedures or who are very nervous we offer oral sedation. This is essentially a small drink which provides more profound reduction in anxiety. It also eliminates most if not all memory of the procedure. This is a very effective method of sedation for anxious patients and we are happy to be able to offer this procedure.
Patient Stories
I can’t believe the whole process was so much quicker then expected.
Maria Ni Dhonaill – Donegal
Veneers
Maria came to the clinic wanting a brand new smile to give her more confidence. After meeting with one of our cosmetic dentists, Maria opted for state of the art Da Vinci veneers to completely transform her smile and she’s never been happier.
I am in love with them! Dr Flannery did such an amazing job, it should be shown off!
Amber Roche – Ratoath Co. Meath
Veneers
Amber came to the clinic to see Dr Sarah Flannery as she was unhappy with how her teeth looked and was conscious about smiling. After discussing what she wanted to change about her smile with Dr Flannery, Amber opted for a combination of teeth whitening and composite veneers to achieve her dream smile.
Frequently Asked Questions for
Nervous Patients
Do I need to bring someone with me if I’m undergoing sedation?
Yes. Oral sedation is very safe in healthy patients however, it does legally require an escort to accompany you until you have recovered several hours later. You do not need to fast with oral sedation, and anyone in good health is a suitable candidate. Oral sedation is chargeable separately, must be paid in advance and is non-refundable if the procedure cannot go ahead due to lack of an escort. You must also sign the treatment plan in advance of treatment under oral sedation as you will not be able to legally consent to treatment once the drugs have been given.
Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?
Absolutely. We encourage nervous patients to bring a supportive friend or family member to their appointments. They can wait with you beforehand and, in some cases, remain present during your treatment if that helps you feel more comfortable.
What if I need to stop during treatment?
We work at your pace. Before beginning treatment, we’ll establish a simple signal system (such as raising your hand) that lets your dentist know you need a break. Your dentist will immediately pause until you’re ready to continue.
How will you help me if I have a strong gag reflex?
We have several techniques to help patients with sensitive gag reflexes, including positioning adjustments, breathing techniques, and in some cases, sedation options. Let us know in advance if this is a concern for you.
Will it hurt?
We use effective local anaesthetics and take extra time to ensure you’re completely numb before beginning any procedure. Many patients are surprised by how little discomfort they experience. For those with injection anxiety, we can discuss sedation options or topical numbing gel.
What if I’m embarrassed about the condition of my teeth?
Our team understands dental anxiety often leads to delayed treatment. We maintain a strict non-judgmental approach and focus solely on moving forward with your care, not looking back.
I haven’t been to a dentist in years. What should I expect at my first appointment?
Your first appointment will primarily be a conversation and gentle examination. There’s no pressure to proceed with treatment immediately. We’ll discuss your concerns, examine your teeth, and develop a plan that moves at a pace you’re comfortable with.
Do I need to decide about sedation before my first appointment?
No, you can discuss all options with your dentist during your initial consultation. Together, you’ll determine which approach best suits your anxiety level and treatment needs.
How does oral sedation work? Will I be unconscious?
With oral sedation, you’ll remain conscious but in a deeply relaxed state. Most patients experience significant anxiety reduction and often have limited memory of the procedure afterwards. You’ll need someone to accompany you home as the effects can last several hours.
I’m nervous about the cost of treatment. What options do I have?
We understand financial concerns can add to dental anxiety. During your consultation, we’ll provide a clear treatment plan with all costs outlined. We offer payment options and can prioritize treatment to spread costs over time if needed.
What if the sedation doesn’t work for me?
Different patients respond differently to sedation. If you still feel anxious after trying one approach, we can discuss alternatives for future appointments. Your comfort is our priority, and we’re committed to finding a solution that works for you.
