Composite bonding

What is Composite bonding?

Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin, shaped by hand directly onto your tooth. It can repair a chip, close a small gap or even out the shape of a tooth. Little or no natural tooth is usually removed, so it’s one of the more conservative ways to change a smile.

Every case starts with a conversation about what you’d like to change. For larger changes, we plan your smile digitally first, so you can see the plan before treatment begins.

Composite bonding cost in Dublin

From €250 per tooth

The final price depends on how much of each tooth needs to be covered and how complex your case is. It’s confirmed in writing after your assessment.

Payment is staged across your treatment plan, and every payment date is set out in writing before treatment begins.

With Invisalign, the teeth are moved first and bonding then refines their shape and any small spaces. With porcelain veneers, veneers can suit the most visible teeth while bonding is used where a more conservative approach is enough. Your dentist recommends what each tooth needs.

How composite bonding works

1. Consultation and design. Start with a free consultation with our Treatment Coordinator, then a dentist examines your teeth and talks through your options. For larger changes we take photographs and design your smile digitally first.

2. Your bonding appointment. The tooth surface is lightly conditioned so the resin can bond. The resin is then applied, shaped by hand and hardened with a special light. Smaller changes to one or two teeth can often be completed in a single appointment. More involved cases take longer and are planned in advance.

3. Review and polish. We check your bite, refine the shape and polish for a natural finish, then talk you through how to look after it.

Making it last

How long bonding lasts depends on your bite, your habits and how you look after it. Composite can stain, and over time it may need polishing, repair or replacing. This is normal. A few things help:

  • Avoid biting nails, ice or pens
  • Tell us if you grind your teeth, as a night guard may help
  • Keep up regular hygiene visits and polishing

Frequently asked questions

How much does composite bonding cost in Dublin?
Composite bonding at Seapoint typically starts from €250 per tooth. The total depends on how much of each tooth needs to be covered and how complex your case is. It’s confirmed in writing after your assessment.

How long does composite bonding last?
Composite bonding typically lasts from 3 to 5 years, though this varies from person to person. It depends on your bite, whether you grind your teeth, what you eat and drink (red wine, curry and smoking can stain composite) and how well you look after it.

After that time, bonding is often still in place but may look less shiny or more stained. A professional polish at a hygiene visit can bring back some lustre, and if the bonding has worn or stained badly, it can be replaced. You can read more in our guide to composite bonding five years on.

Does composite bonding damage your teeth?
Bonding usually involves little to no removal of natural tooth structure, which makes it more conservative than porcelain veneers. Your dentist will tell you if your case needs any preparation.

Does it hurt?
Many patients have bonding without an injection, because little or no tooth is removed. If you’re nervous or have sensitive teeth, tell us and we’ll talk through your options.

Can bonding be whitened?
No. Composite doesn’t respond to whitening gel. If you want whiter teeth, whiten first and we’ll match the bonding to your new shade.

How many teeth do I need?
It depends on your smile. Some patients need one chipped tooth repaired, and others have several visible teeth treated so the result looks balanced. We look at the whole smile, not just the problem tooth.

Composite bonding vs veneers: which is better?
Neither is better in every case. Bonding is more conservative and often quicker. Porcelain veneers are usually longer-lasting but involve more preparation. Your dentist can advise on your case.

Can bonding fix crooked teeth?
Bonding can soften the look of mild crowding. If your teeth would be better moved than built up, we’ll recommend Invisalign or braces first, and sometimes a combination of both.
