Prevention & Hygiene
At Seapoint, we believe that good oral hygiene starts at home. Many dental diseases can be completely prevented by good at-home techniques and regular visits to your dentist and hygienist. We recommend that patients visit their hygienist twice annually, at which stage any potential issues will be flagged and dealt with before they become damaging or any way serious.
We are well versed in dealing with nervous or anxious patients at the clinic. We have a very experienced and caring team and offer a relaxed and calming approach to all of our treatments and procedures. We aim to build long-lasting relationships with our patients, to encourage confidence, loyalty and to improve and encourage a sense of calmness and positivity throughout the patient journey. We offer an oral sedative for those who feel they want a more relaxed visit and have had huge success with all of our patients to date with this addition to our treatments.
Extractions/Wisdom Tooth Removal
Extractions are a lot less common today than they once were, as people are taking better care of their teeth and, as dentists, we are able to save more teeth now than we could previously. Despite these advances, however, there are still times when an extraction of a tooth is the only option. If you do need a tooth taken out, we are able to take out any tooth, including wisdom teeth, and often it will be covered by your health insurer (Wisdom teeth only). This means you will not need a referral or to wait on a long waiting list to get the procedure performed.
We perform most extractions with the use of a good local anaesthetic. We always ensure the area is completely numb before we take a tooth out and your comfort during the procedure is our priority. If you are particularly nervous, we can arrange either oral or I.V. sedation for you to make the procedure more comfortable. We call this ‘twilight sedation’ as often patients feel that they half awake and half-asleep, but very relaxed!
Socket Preservation/ Ridge Preservation
Where a tooth is being taken out and an implant will be placed in the near future, it is advisable to try and preserve as much bone as possible. At the time of extraction, we often recommend the placement of a bone substitute to preserve the ridge shape and bone. This is particularly important in the front of the mouth for cosmetic reasons, but is useful everywhere in the mouth to give you an implant that really looks and feels like a natural tooth. The procedure itself is not painful as it involves placing granules into the socket after thoroughly cleaning the socket. There is no additional discomfort afterwards.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
We are able to extract all wisdom teeth at Seapoint Clinic, even more difficult impactions. Most wisdom tooth extractions are performed under local anaesthetic and sedation, but we can arrange a general anaesthetic if necessary. Our dentists are registered with the majority of well-known reputable insurance companies, so typically your extractions will be covered completely by your insurer (You may be liable for fees for sedation or general anaesthesia, however).
Wisdom tooth removal will generally require a surgical approach, which means you may be more sore and swollen afterwards. We will give you pain medication to keep you as comfortable as possible and antibiotics to help your general healing, but you may need to set aside a few days from work, to allow you to heal and relax in comfort.
Headaches, Teeth Grinding and Jawaches
Many people suffer from headaches and migraines, which are actually related to disorders in their sleep. Many patients we see wake up in the morning with stiff muscles and headaches, sometimes with difficulty opening their mouth or chewing properly.
Typically, this is related to teeth grinding at night and it can be easily corrected with the manufacture of an NTI appliance. This small easy to wear appliance fits over the front teeth only and gently separates them during sleep. If you suffer from tooth grinding or headaches it is worth checking if an NTI or nightguard can be of benefit to you. We have helped dozens of patients with these remarkable and simple treatments.
If you grind your teeth in your sleep, you can cause enormous damage over time to natural teeth and indeed dental crowns/implants/veneers etc. If you wear a nightguard, this damage can be prevented and your teeth will likely last the rest of your life.
Eating disorders can cause significant damage to your teeth. Often a dentist will be the first health care professional to spot the signs of eating disorders due to the extensive and rapid damage that can occur. At Seapoint Clinic, we have treated many people with eating disorders so you can be rest assured that you will be dealt with in complete confidence. We offer a non-judgemental and caring service to all of our patients and will try to help you in whatever way we can. No matter how extensive the damage you have suffered, we will be able to help you on the road to recovery and towards regaining your beautiful smile.
Bulimia, in particular, can cause a smile to deteriorate in just a few months. This is due to the cycle of binging and purging which occurs. Typical problems which can result include loss of the protective enamel coating, tooth decay, chipping and fracturing of the teeth.
If you have suffered from bulimia or anorexia in the past, your damaged teeth can be a painful reminder of how you suffered. Thankfully we are able to give you back a beautiful smile, no matter how bad the effects on your teeth have been. When your teeth are repaired, your confidence will return and you can leave the painful memories behind. You will no longer need to feel self-conscious about your teeth and smile.
