Ireland & UK lead the way in Green Dentistry

Ireland & UK lead the way in Green Dentistry

Green Dentistry is the provision of oral healthcare and dental treatments using procedures, technology and materials that are environmentally friendly. A Dental practice that is committed to “Green Dentistry” will focus on its ecological footprint. Here are some key ways that Irish and British practices are safeguarding the environment:

Mercury

One of the major by -products of old albumen fillings has been the highly toxic substance, mercury. These fillings are still used by most dentists, as they are cheaper for many patients. One of the risks of having elemental mercury in the waste water system is that it can eventually be ingested by fish, which are then consumed by humans.

By securely separating mercury and disposing of it safely, dentists in Ireland and the UK are leading the way in making the industry more environmentally friendly.

On Earth Day in 2011 the US Eco Dentistry Association, said that that Ireland and the UK are "ahead of the curve" when it comes to capturing mercury-containing materials before they enter the water system. Separator machines which safely separate the mercury and prevent it from being disposed in the waste water system, are a legal requirement for dentists in certain European countries but not, for example, in the USA.

Reducing waste and pollution-The everyday tools of your dentist include sterilising fluids, bibs and wipes, which are all polluting to the environment. Many UK dentists now use reusable bibs and cleaning and disinfection products that are effective yet kind to the environment and follow a recycling program for all other toxic waste. Steam sterilisation is a usual practice in Irish and UK dental practices, which avoids the need for use of chemicals.

Saving Water and Electricity

By using a dry vacuum system when working rather than a water based system some Dentists are making substantial savings in water in their practices. The use of higher efficient bulbs in practices is reducing the environmental impact.

X-rays

More high-end dentists in Ireland and the UK now use digital x-rays for dental work and dental implant, which does away with the need for the chemicals involved in conventional x-rays. The equipment used in digital radiography also exposes dental patients to 90% less radiation and there are also no lead foils or paper to dispose of.

Promoting health and awareness

A lasting effect of green dentistry is promoting environmental awareness in patients. Encouraging patients to lead a healthy lifestyle, which not only impacts their oral health but also protects the environment, is now a key part of the advice given by Irish and British dental practices.

Seapoint Clinic is proud to be a Mercury-free practice and is at the fore-front of best practice Irish dentistry.
