Preparing for Dental Implants

Preparing for Dental Implants

There are a number of things you can do to increase the chance of success with dental implants. We recommend giving up smoking before having implants placed as this makes the gum and bone heal better. It is important to have good oral hygiene before implants are placed and for that reason we usually book you with the hygienist on the day of implant placement.

It is a good idea to have some ice made at home so you can place some cold packs over the area. Ice will help reduce the bruising and swelling that nearly always occurs after implant placement.

If you are particularly concerned about bruising and swelling there is a special makeup for after surgery that can be purchased. Many of our patients find arnica ointment very effective at speeding up the breakdown of bruises after surgery so it is a good idea to have some purchased.

Anxiety:

We do our very best to make the day of implant surgery as easy as possible for you. If you are particularly anxious about what you are having done then we can provide something to help you sleep the night before. Let us know if this would be helpful for you and we can get a prescription to you.

Escort:

If you are having some sedation for your implant placement (which is the most common method) it is essential to have someone with you to drive you home and ensure you are properly looked after. You cannot drive for 24 hours after sedation and we will not provide sedation in the absence of an escort, which could result in a rescheduled appointment.
