Are composite veneers and cosmetic bondings the same thing?

This is a question our dentists get asked a lot and although they are made using the same material, there are differences between the two treatments. Cosmetic bondings are used to fill in chips to natural teeth or to shape uneven edges or sides of teeth. Composite veneers would be used to cover a larger surface area of the entire natural tooth. These can be used to change the size, shape, colour and size of natural teeth.

With instant veneers/Composite veneers we are changing the entire front surface of the tooth and not using the existing contour of the teeth as a guide. It is therefore considerably more difficult and requires more skill than a composite bonding. We can also change the colour of the tooth quite dramatically with composite veneers. With a bonding we need to use the same shade as the existing tooth and are more limited therefore.

Typically with composite veneers we will carry out veneers on 4-6 teeth at a minimum. By doing that we can get a better balance of colour and shape for the new teeth and give you the best appearance possible.
